The Memphis Police Department (MPD) has approximately 2,400 officers and is on target to be over 2,500 by the end of 2011. Automated License Plate Readers are in place, and detect vehicles of interest, gang members, known felons, expired tags, and sex offenders among others within its field of view.

The Citizen Safety Coalition was formed to educate legislators on the necessity for tougher gun-crime laws. Legislation providing tougher sentences for those convicted of aggravated robbery was enacted, a major step forward on this strategy.

Strategy Highlights

The Shelby County Domestic Violence Court opened in fall 2009 to provide consistent and effective prosecution under presiding Judge Lee Wilson. The D.A.’s Office Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit is now vertically prosecuting all domestic violence cases it handles.
