MEMPHIS SHELBY CRIME COMMISSION
STRATEGIC STATEMENT 2007
Statement Purpose: To identify the most critical objectives of the Crime Commission for 2007, capture the rationale and need expressed, and provide the problem-solving strategies necessary to address each targeted concern. Each objective is examined based upon the vision of the Crime Commission that has emerged since 1997 and which was confirmed through the establishment of our Guiding Principles in 2000.
Vision: To establish and sustain the Crime Commission as the preeminent voice of criminal justice public policy in the Mid-South, while acknowledging that our energy and efforts must target the public safety, crime prevention and fear reduction needs of Memphis and Shelby County. This role is pursued through leadership, advocacy, research and collaboration, all on behalf of the systemic change, transformation and reformation that are required in a justice system housed in a community that is safe and without fear.
Objective 1: To reaffirm the strong foundation of financial support that has historically characterized the Crime Commission, so that the Crime Commission can attract and retain the brightest minds in criminal justice, leveraging that collective intellect and aptitude to the fullest.
Objective 2: To continue to ensure that the Crime Commission operates as effectively and efficiently as possible, directing resources toward the most pressing criminal justice and public safety issues and maximizing the contributions of staff members.
Objective 3: To sustain the most robust relationships possible with strong community partners, whose independent strength and value, when combined with the Crime Commission, creates the most formidable community resource imaginable.
Objective 4: To stake a prominent claim to the historic successes and prowess that the Crime Commission has enjoyed, as well as the current initiatives that are underway.
Objective 5: To weigh in on the most critical of crime and justice issues that confront Memphis and Shelby County, even when those concerns or their solutions may challenge the conventional wisdom.
Objective 6: To prudently select research initiatives, targeting only those best practice inquiries, agency and inter-organizational requests that will best employ the capacity of the Crime Commission and are most likely to produce demonstrable positive results.
Objective 7: To be a model steward of public policy deliberation, strategic planning and collaborative efforts on behalf of the criminal justice system and the community, and to serve as a powerful local convening authority and intermediary.
Objective 8: To focus on data-driven decision-making and evidence-based policy as the most effective tools for the creation of criminal justice public policy and the strongest impetus for systemic change.
Objective 9: To examine the justice system as a holistic enterprise that demands continuous scrutiny, care, innovation, political courage and moral leadership.
Objective 10: To commit the Crime Commission’s energies, passions and abilities to the issues that define our community’s future: revitalization, crime and youth violence prevention and the reduction of fear and cynicism.
